Ukraine restores pre-war watermelon export volumes to the EU

Following the occupation of parts of southern Ukraine, watermelon cultivation areas in the country have recovered. Central and eastern regions have emerged as new leaders in production.

Before Russia’s full-scale invasion, Ukraine exported significant volumes of melons to the EU. In 2020, exports reached nearly 36,000 tons of watermelons and melons, setting a record for melon crop exports.

From January to August 2024, Ukraine exported 1,580 tons of watermelons worth $314,000. Compared to the same period in 2023, when only 39.99 tons were exported, this represents a 39.5-fold increase.

Based on these figures, further growth in exports can be anticipated.

Last year, the main markets for Ukrainian watermelons were Latvia, Lithuania, and Poland, which together accounted for 92% of total exports.
