Over 60% of bioethanol exports provided by private producers

In 2024, Ukraine exported 99.3 thousand tons of bioethanol.

The production capacity of the 17 bioethanol plants operating in the country exceeds 420 thousand tons per year. Twelve of these plants have been privatized in recent years.

Only three privatized bioethanol plants exported 38.1 thousand tons in 2024, accounting for 38% of total exports. Private producers contributed 62% of bioethanol exports.

Key factors for the development of bioethanol production in Ukraine include:

  • Replacement of Russian methanol with Ukrainian bioethanol by oil and gas companies;
  • Supply of consolidated bioethanol batches (minimum 10 thousand tons) to the EU market;
  • Logistics of bioethanol exports via tankers to EU refineries, with return deliveries of gasoline to Ukraine;
  • Cancellation of bioethanol export quotas to the EU (the 100-thousand-ton annual ethyl alcohol quota has been reinstated);
  • Introduction of a mandatory 5% bioethanol blend in gasoline in Ukraine.
