Ukraine’s sunflower meal exports for September–May 2024/25 MY reached 2.68 million tonnes, a 29% decrease from the same period in the 2023/24 season and the lowest volume since 2011/12 MY.
Over the nine months of the current season, 1.3 million tonnes were exported to the EU, a 22% decrease compared to the previous season. Ukrainian sunflower meal accounts for 63% of the EU’s total sunflower meal imports (43% in the prior season), but faces strong competition from soybean meal and Argentine sunflower meal, whose share increased to 28% (20% in the previous MY).
Exports to China dropped by 25% to 944,000 tonnes. Ukrainian sunflower meal held about 60% of China’s total imports for September–April of the current season (71% in the 2023/24 season). Russian sunflower meal accounted for up to 27% of China’s imports during this period, an increase compared to 9% in the previous MY.
Moreover, shipments of sunflower meal from Kazakhstan to China surged nearly fivefold, reaching a 5% share of China’s imports.
