The European Parliament has approved the renewal of the road transport agreement between the EU and Ukraine, extending its validity until the end of 2025.
The decision was supported by 488 MEPs, with 137 voting against and 34 abstaining.
Given that the agreement was set to expire in June 2024, its application had been extended pending official approval by the European Parliament and the EU Council.
The updated agreement requires drivers to carry documents authorizing international transport. They must also display a sticker on their windshield confirming that their activities fall under the agreement. A safeguard clause allows for the suspension of the agreement in a specific geographical area in case of significant disruptions to the local road transport market.
Following the European Parliament’s vote to extend the “transport visa-free regime”, the decision now awaits final approval by the EU Council.
