Ukraine sees significant increase in fertilizer imports since the beginning of the year

As of June 1, fertilizer import volumes have increased by 30% compared to the previous year. The increase is observed across all types of fertilizers, with particularly notable growth in nitrogen-phosphorus, NPK, and potassium fertilizers, where volumes surged by 49-52%. Interestingly, in monetary terms, the import value has grown even more significantly due to both rising fertilizer prices and an unfavorable exchange rate for the hryvnia.

The total import volume of fertilizers for the first five months reached 1.3 million tons.

In nitrogen fertilizer imports, there has been a notable trend of consolidation, with one importer accounting for 24.5% of the total import volume. The leading importer of nitrogen-phosphorus fertilizers holds a more modest share of 15.1%. Meanwhile, the top importer of NPK fertilizers accounts for 13.6% of imports, which aligns with its market share, as domestic production in Ukraine is relatively limited. In the phosphorus-potassium fertilizer segment, the market leader holds a significant 28.3% of total imports.
