Ukraine returns to historical export routes, supplying 90% of food by sea

Ukraine has nearly returned to its historical export routes via sea. Before the full-scale invasion, 94% of agricultural products were exported by sea, and today, this figure stands at 90%.

According to data from the State Customs Service of Ukraine, in 2024, Ukraine exported food products (UKTZED groups 1–24, as well as casein, albumins, hides, fur, wool, etc.) worth USD 24.84 billion.

Key products of Ukraine’s agricultural exports traditionally include cereals, oils and fats, various oilseeds, food and processing industry residues, meat, and by-products. The list was supplemented by sugar and sugar confectionery.

In 2024, the volume of Ukrainian agricultural product exports to EU member states increased by 3% compared to 2023, reaching USD 13 billion from USD 12.6 billion. The EU accounted for 52.4% of Ukraine’s total agricultural exports.

Asia retained its position as the second-largest market in 2024, with a share of 30.2%, and exports to the region amounted to USD 7.5 billion.

Exports to African countries in 2024 generated USD 2.6 billion, securing a 10.5% share of Ukraine’s agricultural exports.

A notable feature of 2024 was the shift in the ranking of the largest buyers of Ukrainian food products.

Main buyers of Ukrainian food products in 2024: Spain – USD 2.679 billion; the Netherlands – USD 1.799 billion; Turkey – USD 1.658 billion; Poland – USD 1.523 billion; Romania – USD 836 million; Egypt – USD 1.408 billion; Italy – USD 1.312 billion; China – USD 1.302 billion; Germany – USD 1.272 billion; India – USD 848 million.
