Ukrainian sunflower oil losing ground in the Chinese market

From September to April of the 2025/26 marketing year, Ukraine exported only 3.3 million tons of sunflower oil, a quarter less than the same period in the previous season, marking the lowest volume for this period since the 2016/17 marketing year.

While the EU remains the key market for Ukrainian sunflower oil, its position in the Asian market is weakening.

Ukraine has significantly lost its position in the Asian market due to complex logistics and strong competition from cheaper soybean oil, as well as sunflower oil of Russian and Argentine origin.

In the Chinese market, the share of Ukrainian sunflower oil imports from September to March dropped to 15% (down from 28% in the same period of 2023/24), while Russian sunflower oil accounted for approximately 61% (62%). This season, Kazakh sunflower oil made up 19% of China’s total sunflower oil imports (up from 9%).
